Caritas in Veritate ("Love in Truth")

Pope Benedict XVI explores social problems within the context of love in truth in his third encyclical and first letter on social doctrine. The Holy Father argues that charity linked with truth that governs justice and the common good is the two-fold principle behind authentic human development and global progress.

Charity, though at the core of the message and practice of Christianity as well as the Church’s social philosophy, is often “misinterpreted, detached from ethical living” (CV, no. 2) and undervalued especially in public arenas, the Pope writes. There is a grave need, therefore, to bind and understand love or charity with truth to give credibility and authenticity to social and cultural practice.

"Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality,” the Roman Pontiff explains. "Without trust and love for what is true ... social action ends up serving private interests and the logic of power, resulting in social fragmentation, especially in a globalized society." (CV, no. 3).

The encyclical also sheds light on concerns of the global community such as the economic crisis, ecological balance, human rights and world hunger.
